Ranked men's teams rally

No. 9 Mary Hardin-Baylor finished the game on a 9-2 run to remain unbeaten, defeating Texas-Dallas 64-56. The Crusaders were among a handful of highly ranked teams that trailed in the second half on Saturday, joining No. 5 Emory and No. 7 Williams, while No. 3 Augustana fell at home to North Central (Ill.).

Texas-Dallas led by nine in the second half before a 12-2 run gave UMHB a 42-41 lead. UTD cut it back to a one-point lead with 2:51 remaining, but Marlon Miller wrapped back-to-back threes around a pair of Comet free throws to give the Cru a five-point lead and UMHB closed the game on a 6-0 run.

Emory's Jake Davis tipped in a missed three-pointer just before the final buzzer to give the fifth-ranked Eagles an 83-81 victory against Rochester at home in the teams' UAA opener. The Yellowjackets had just tied the game for the second time in the last two minutes on a Rob Reid putback with 32 seconds to play.

Seventh-ranked Williams seemed on the way to its second loss in less than 24 hours before going on a 13-0 run to start the second half and eventually pull away from Bates 67-47. North Central (Ill.) took the lead with 7:14 left and went on to defeat No. 3 Augustana 67-62 on the road. The Cardinals, who played just eight players, got 20 points from Kevin Gillespie.

Playing essentially just six players, No. 11 Whitworth went to 16th-ranked Puget Sound and came away 80-67 winners. Felix Friedt and Idris Lasisi each scored 21 for the Pirates. Defiance led the entire way in knocking off No. 25 Transylvania 74-64. Four players scored in double figures for the Yellow Jackets, with three of them coming off the bench to do so.

Ohio Wesleyan came into its key NCAC matchup with Wittenberg with a sparkling 11-1 record and an unbeaten conference mark, but the Tigers came into OWU and walked out with a win, 57-55. The Bishops battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit but Wittenberg took the lead for good on a Clayton Black layup with 2:02 to go. No. 10 UW-Whitewater got 31 points from Chris Davis and cruised to an 84-70 home win against UW-River Falls.

Tufts couldn't pull off the second consecutive upset, falling at No. 1 Middlebury despite shooting 7-for-12 from three-point range. Marietta won its 1,000th game, winning 99-78 against Heidelberg despite 21 points from Dane Givner. John Carroll took over sole possession of first place in the OAC with an 82-64 win at Wilmington, shooting 52 percent from the floor despite taking the longest road trip in the conference.

Hartwick lost for the first time this season, falling 72-66 at Alfred, while NYU picked up its first loss as well, at home to Brandeis 52-49. Lycoming lost its first game after 12 wins, falling 82-80 to King's.

Tommy Morgan's basket with five seconds left in regulation forced overtime, his layup with 16 seconds left in the first overtime helped Scranton overcome a one-point deficit, and he had an assist and two free throws late in the second overtime to give the Royals the game's final four points and an 80-76 home win against Catholic. Milton Stanley scored 25 and Wes Lambert added 22 as Maryville pulled away from Greensboro 106-96 in overtime. Freshman Marco Coppola recorded a steal that led to the game-winning bucket with less than 10 seconds remaining to help visiting WPI defeat Babson 70-68.

St. Mary's (Minn.) won for the first time this season and sent Macalester to its 10th loss in a 62-47 victory. Senior guard Kevin Breslin converted a conventional three-point play to force overtime and sunk the game-winning free throws with one second left in the extra period to give host Washington College an 84-82 overtime win over visiting Gettysburg. Junior guard Lee Vazquez had game highs of 35 points and seven steals and junior center Matt Devine racked up nine blocked shots and a career high 18 points to power Westfield State to a 85-54 victory over Salem State.Senior Mike Case scored a season-high 28 points and junior Ryan Nowicki added 14 to help Hanover to a 75-61 victory at Bluffton. The Panthers improved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the HCAC.
